I cannot tell you how pleased I am that so many of you responded to the invitation to join me in a creative session.
Several of you asked if I would run a session in the evening, UK time, either because you are in a different time zone or because of daytime responsibilities.
So, I’ve set another date: 3rd July at 8pm UK time.
The details are still the same (I’ve added them below as a reminder). And paid subscribers can use the same discount code when booking (scroll down).
I’m also planning a series of art historical, ekphrastic writing courses and workshops for later in the year - I’m so excited by the possibilities! Let me know if you have any suggestions for what I could offer that would be of interest to you x
Writing Invitation
Are you an art lover who would like to try your hand at expressing the impact art has on you through the written word? Or perhaps you are a writer or aspiring writer looking for ways to find inspiration. How can we use art to inspire words?
Join me for an online creative writing workshop that brings together the visual and the written.
Ekphrastic writing uses art as the subject matter and inspiration for creative writing. Ekphrasis translates as ‘description’ in Greek and, today, an ekphrasis is used to mean a literary description of art. In effect, it is one artist responding to another, using a verbal response to visual representations.
But beyond writing about what you see, ekphrasis is about connecting to an image, exploring how our encounter with it makes us feel. What memories does it evoke? What story might it be telling? What do you think the artist was trying to say and what might you say to them?
This session will explore the 'mother' - our own mothers, our own mothering and/or our own motherhoods - using visual examples of mothering from across art history.
You can expect to leave this workshop with:
Writing tools and practices to carry you forward.
Renewed visual analysis skills, with associated language appropriate for responding to the visual arts.
The space to combine the visual and written to interrogate your imagination and spark creativity.
Of course, you may be able to use this time for peaceful reflection. However, if you need to balance this session with care-giving you are welcome to bring along babies, children etc.

The first session will run online on 6th June 2024, from 10am until 11.15am UK time.
