Thread & Thought is a monthly, hour-long creative session online where we follow a thread and deepen a thought. I run Thread & Thought as part of my practice as a writer and art historian and these are low-pressure workshops designed to help you carve out time to write, reflect, and experiment.

What happens in a session:

  • A welcome and a warm-up exercise or two

  • We study an artwork - individually and together - I’ll guide you through this & give some art historical detail too

  • We sit together and write (or sketch!)

  • There is the option to reflect or share, if it feels right, at the end of the session. Or we have a discussion on the artwork and/or the theme.

Body As Story

The theme for June was Body as Story and I wanted to think about bodies as surfaces. Landscapes that - in the marks of skin, skeleton, posture - can recall memory, imagination, and possibility.

The theme was prompted by this self-portrait by Kiki Smith.

Look at it for a while. How does your eye move across the surface? Can you orientate yourself? Where are you drawn to? What are we looking at?
