Here we are, just past the midsummer mark and I’ve just come inside from sitting in the garden watching three bats rise and dip across the inky sky. These evenings make me feel ageless, more solid in myself, and more nostalgic that any Christmas morning.

I walk out of the garden into the allotments barefoot, curl up with my daughter on the bank of sun-baked grass. We shake the poppy heads and marvel at the abundance of tiny seeds. I marvel at the fact that not much more that two years ago, she was no bigger than this seed.

Then, I give my own head a shake and and slide down the bank with her, giggling.

I’m thinking of the play of sunlight, as well as the movement of thought, colour, memory, and language. Of squeals of delight and what brings joy.

What is Thread & Thought?

These are low-pressure workshops designed to help you carve out time to write, reflect, and reconnect with your creative process: less formal teaching, more space to experiment.

I run them online on the first Thursday of every month at 8pm UK time.

It’s not too late to join, simply sign up here as a paid subscriber for access to the workshop live link and all the materials:

What happens in a session:

  • A welcome and a warm-up exercise or two

  • We study an artwork - individually and together - I’ll guide you through this & give some art historical detail too

  • We sit together and write (or sketch!)

  • There is the option to reflect or share, if it feels right, at the end of the session. Or we have a discussion on the artwork and/or the theme.

In addition to the above, I share a handful of short reading recommendations based on the monthly theme. I also send out all the prompts after the session for future reference.

From recent attendees:

“I loved the session Joanna…I finished a piece of writing inspired by the idea of the body in flux and a new beginning”

“It was thoughtful and inspiring”.

Upcoming themes:

I’m open to suggestions, whether thematic or a work of art you’d like to explore. Let me know in the comments or send me a message with your ideas!

In the meantime, here are the proposed themes for the coming months.

August – Mirrors, Shadows & Doubles

A chance to explore perception, projection, and the layered nature of identity.

September – Timekeepers: Cycles & Seasons

A chance to reflect on how time shapes us and think about what changes, grows, or what remains constant.

October - Mapping the Interior

Exploring the metaphor of interior spaces - attics, kitchens, bedrooms.

I hope you can join me this Thursday - all the necessary links are below x
